Traditional farming methods of Katarni Rice

Farmers still primarily use plowing, harrowing, puddling, and planking to farm Katarni rice. When the panicles have fully developed and the plants have gone yellow, which occurs in the last week of November to mid-December, the crop is harvested. With sickles, the crop is physically harvested. After threshing, the grains must be sun-dried to be stored.

Between 15 and 30 quintals are produced on average per hectare. This particular species is extremely vulnerable to pests and ailments like stemborer and bacterial blight. Due to its short grains, this cultivar has a low export value.
